An 8-year-old boy was struck and killed in a hit-and-run accident on Detroit’s southwest side, police said Thursday evening.

Police received a call at 5 p.m. that the boy was struck in the area of Miami and Fort Street. The 8-year-old was northbound on Fort, police said.

Witnesses said the 8-year-old was crossing the street when a dark-blue Chevy Tahoe driven by a male ran a red light. Police are searching for the suspect.

Homicide Capt. Michael McGinnis said the boy’s parents were searching for him after he left his home two blocks away from the accident.

Police believe he was heading to a nearby park with his wagon when he was struck.

“(A) very tragic scene,” said McGinnis. “The impact was fatal and we are searching for the vehicle, which should have accident damage to one of the headlights.”
