Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller has been named to the Great Lakes Commission.

State Rep. Tom Leonard announced the appointment Tuesday.

“She has the right experience working on international relations and border issues, she is deeply invested in our Great Lakes basin and local environmental policies, and she has recently taken on the role of cleaning up the waterways of Macomb County and protecting southeast Michigan’s critical infrastructure,” Leonard said in a statement.

“This new role is a perfect fit, and we are all looking forward to seeing what Candice Miller can do for the people of Michigan and our precious natural resources.”

The goal of the Great Lakes Commission is to promote a strong economy, healthy environment and high quality of life for residents in the Great Lakes basin.

Miller previously served as a member of Congress, where she sat on the Water Resource Subcommittee.

Miller said she also worked on invasive species legislation, water quality monitoring systems, pipeline safety in the St. Clair River and Straits of Mackinac and efforts to prevent the diversion of Great Lakes water outside of the region.

“There are so many important issues facing our lakes,” Miller said. “I look forward to working with the commission to address these issues and more.”
