Great Lakes Recycling fire under control Sunday

A fire in a building near the Arbor Hills Landfill was under control late Sunday, according to Northville Township, which initially provided fire aid.

The fire that started about 3 p.m. Sunday was not at the landfill, according to information on the township's website Sunday. The blaze was located at the Great Lakes Recycling building behind the landfill near Five Mile in Salem Township, according to Northville’s Public Safety Fire Services.

Fire departments from surrounding areas helped put out the blaze. Billowing smoke could be seen for miles, according to media and Twitter reports.

There were no injuries and no one was in the building at the time, said Northville Township Supervisor Robert Nix II, who had said on the township's website shortly after the fire began that he had gone to the scene at Five Mile and Napier at 4 p.m.

The building was “some distance” from the landfill and wasn’t close enough to the dump to threaten it, which was a concern for firefighters and residents, he said.

A Northville Township Fire Services officer said the township at one point responded to the fire. “We went out there ... and we are done.” He said a mutual aid agency that covers Washtenaw County was activated to fight the blaze. Salem Township in Washtenaw County is near the border of Northville, which is in Wayne County.

Huron Valley Ambulance, which handles fire dispatch services in the area, said the fire was at the Great Lakes Recycling but said further questions would be forwarded to a command post handling media inquiries.
