Tigers’ Fulmer is Sporting News Rookie of the Year

Detroit Tigers starter Michael Fulmer has been named American League Rookie of the Year by the Sporting News.

Fulmer, 23, made 26 starts for the Tigers this season and went 11-7 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.12 WHIP.

He logged 159 innings, second-most on the team to Justin Verlander’s 227.2. He had 132 strikeouts and 42 walks and averaged 7.47 strikeouts per nine innings.

The Sporting News has given out Rookie of the Year awards since 1946. The award is voted on by MLB players. Cleveland Indians center fielder Tyler Naquin finished second in the voting and New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez was third.
