Police name suspect who escaped two police agencies
Marysville police have identified a suspect who remains on the loose after escaping during a planned prisoner exchange Saturday morning between Clinton Township and Marysville police.
The suspect is Nicholas Ian Mosher, 21, and he has two warrants for his arrest by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, according to a release from the Marysville Police Department. Mosher is 6 feet, 3 inches tall, about 180 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes, police said. When he was last seen, he was wearing hospital scrubs and a cast on his left arm or wrist.
Police first got a 12:15 a.m. call on Saturday from a resident who said he’d found Mosher sleeping in his boat.
When police arrived, they allegedly the man walking around in the area of 15 Mile and Groesbeck. They ran a criminal check on the man and learned he had an outstanding warrant out of St. Clair County. They drove the man to the area of Interstate 94 and 26 Mile Road to turn him over to the Marysville Police Department.
According to a police source, the suspect, who had been extremely cooperative and was wearing a large cast, could not be handcuffed. During the planned exchange, the man turned around, ran into the woods, and was never seen again.
That cast is on his left arm, police said, and he was wearing hospital scrubs at the time of his arrest.
Clinton Township and Marysville police pursued the man in the woods, and included K-9 officers in the chase, but were ultimately unable to track him. A helicopter was even brought in on the search, though Capt. Bruce Wade of the Clinton Township Police Department didn’t know which agency had supplied it. None of it worked.
Asked if any discipline would result after the escape, Wade said personnel matters are confidential, but added that “when something like this happens, we have to go back and take a real strict look at what happened, and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Clinton Township police hadn’t published the man’s name or picture because the man “very closely resembles a family member,” Wade said. Marysville released the suspect’s name and previous mugshot Monday.
“It took some time to determine his true identity after he fled from officers,” officials said in the statement.
Multiple police sources said the suspect gave police a fake name, but that the name he gave also had a probation violation warrant for his arrest — meaning that the man who escaped is not the man Marysville police are looking for.
Reached Monday by The News, Marysville Police Chief Thomas Konik said the probationer whose name was given by the escapee was arrested over the weekend by Port Huron police, and that that exchange took place without incident.
Konik said that after the failed exchange, he got a call from the Marysville officer involved, but is waiting for the full, typed report of the incident to determine exactly what happened and what needs to change, and if any disciplinary action will be required.
Video of the incident was not taken, according to both police departments.
