A Michigan State Police trooper was seriously injured Friday in an accident on Interstate 94 that stemmed from a road-rage dispute between two drivers.

Lt. Michael Shaw said a silver Chevrolet Malibu struck Ali Hammoud who was driving a motorcycle in the eastbound lanes near the Nine Mile exit in Macomb County.

Hammoud suffered injuries including a broken clavicle and ribs, but is alert, Shaw said. He was taken to St. John Hospital where he is in serious condition.

“He’s still being evaluated,” Shaw said Friday afternoon. “He’s in a good deal of pain, but he’s in good spirits.”

The accident was reportedly caused by a man driving a GMC pickup who swerved in front of the Malibu in the left lane and slammed on his brakes, Shaw said.

The Malibu driver was unable to stop and swerved into the center lanes and struck the trooper.

Shaw said the driver of the GMC pickup fled the scene, but “the person who hit the motorcycle did stop and has been very helpful.”

Hammoud was traveling to the funeral in St. Clair Shores for Detroit Police Sgt. Kenneth Steil when the crash occurred. Shaw and other officers left the church to respond to the crash.
