A 26-year-old woman died after she and a man were shot while driving in the area of Eight Mile and Greenfield early Monday morning, police said.

The shooting took place about 12:30 a.m. on the Lodge service drive near Eight Mile and Greenfield.

On Monday afternoon, the Wayne County Examiner’s Office indentified the woman as Ranita Cannon and ruled her death a homicide from multiple gunshot wounds.

Cannon was driving a maroon Pontiac G6 when another vehicle pulled up alongside and opened fire, said Kenyetta Hebron, a Detroit Police Department spokeswoman. Cannon died at the scene.

Police don’t have a description of that vehicle or the suspects, Hebron said.

The male passenger, who is in his 30s, was taken by EMS to a hospital. His condition was unknown, Hebron said.

In an incident authorities believe is unrelated, about 90 minutes after the service drive shooting, a man reported being shot in the leg on the northbound side of the Lodge Freeway, somewhere between Seven Mile and Eight Mile.

The man, whose age is as yet unknown to police, drove himself to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital, but his condition is unknown, said Lt. Mike Shaw of Michigan State Police.

State police patrol the freeways in Michigan, and closed the freeway for a time to find evidence, which was recovered, Shaw said. That portion of the freeway has been open since before 8 a.m.
