Sisters dragged, killed after running red light in car

The Detroit News

Two young women police believe to be sisters were killed Thursday morning when the car they were driving ran a red light and became lodged underneath a semitrailer.

The two women, believed to be 19- and 23-year-old sisters from Dearborn Heights, were driving in their Ford Focus traveling northbound on Beech Daly near Van Born shortly after 9 a.m., said Dearborn Heights Police Chief Lee Gavin. They ran a red light and struck a truck traveling westbound through the intersection.

The Focus became lodged under the truck’s trailer and they were dragged about 200 yards, said Gavin. Eventually the car made it’s way to the back end of the trailer and dislodged. Gavin said police believe the truck rolled over the car, crushing it and pinning the women inside.

They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were not releasing the names of the two women and did not say which of the two were driving at the time. Gavins said witnesses told police the car had been driving erratically and the driver may have been on her cellphone when she ran the red light.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
