A several-mile stretch of eastbound Interstate 696 will be closed this weekend west of Telegraph as part of an ongoing concrete replacement project, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

All eastbound lanes will close from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday between the I-275/I-96/M-5 interchange in Novi and Farmington Hills and Telegraph Road in Southfield, officials said. The closures are weather dependent.

The Orchard Lake ramps onto I-696 also will be closed, but ramps to and from Telegraph and Lahser will be open. In addition, there will be sporadic lane closures along the eastbound expressway between Telegraph to Lahser, officials said.

Motorists in the area are encouraged to detour from eastbound I-696 onto eastbound M-5 to eastbound Eight Mile, where they then can take northbound Telegraph back to eastbound I-696.

Eastbound and westbound M-5 ramps to eastbound I-696 will remain closed until mid-August. To avoid these closures, drivers can follow a series of steps recommended by MDOT: Take westbound M-5 to westbound I-96, then southbound along Beck Road to eastbound I-96. From there, travelers can enter eastbound M-5 to eastbound Eight Mile, following that to northbound Telegraph and eastbound I-696.

Northbound I-275 remains closed until mid-September from the I-96/M-14 interchange to I-96/I-696/M-5, officials said.

The lane and ramp closures are related to a $75 million project to replace 88 miles of concrete pavement along I-275 from north of Five Mile up to the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange, officials said. The investment also involves repairs along I-696, and work on 16 bridges, drainage areas and intelligent transportation systems (ITS).

More information on the project can be found at the “Revive 275” website as well as through MDOT.
