With all charges against him dropped and the case closed, Davontae Sanford is finally free. But how did we go from an innocent 14-year-old boy being put in prison for a crime he didn't commit to now? Controversy at the DNC
- Ingham County Prosecutor and former state Sen. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday helped Michigan delegates kick off the Democratic National Convention with an all-woman breakfast, a nod to the pending nomination of Hillary Clinton for president. But the loudest cheers of the morning weren’t for Clinton. They were from Bernie Sanders’ delegates.
- Democratic Party Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said Sunday she will resign after this week’s presidential nominating convention, bowing to pressure after leaked emails appeared to show party officials working to undermine Bernie Sander’s campaign against presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton. It's been a rough morning for her.
- And apparently former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm isn't looking to take over the gig, even though her name has been thrown around.
- For his part, GOP nominee Donald Trump dismissed as a “joke” claims by Hillary Clinton’s campaign that Russia is trying to help Trump by leaking thousands of emails from the Democratic National Committee. Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta added fuel to the debate today, saying there was “a kind of bromance going on” between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump. The Clinton campaign says Russia favors Trump’s views, especially on NATO.

Three attacks
- Gunfire erupted at a nightclub hosting a swimsuit-themed party for teens in Florida, leaving two teens dead and at least 17 other people wounded, officials said today.
- A suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into a checkpoint outside a Shiite town north of Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 14 people, Iraqi officials said, while a string of bombings in the Iraqi capital killed nine more people.
- A failed asylum-seeker from Syria blew himself up and wounded 15 people after being turned away from an open-air music festival in southern Germany, authorities said Monday. It was the fourth attack to shake Germany in a week — three of them carried out by recent migrants.
Finally some answers
Daniel Allan Clay, a 27-year-old Newport man, has been charged with second-degree murder in the October 2014 death of Chelsea Bruck, and will be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Monroe County, court records show. According to Wayne County Medical Examiner spokesman Lloyd Jackson, Bruck’s manner of death is homicide, and the cause of death is blunt-force trauma to the head.
Sorry Dan Gilbert
Verizon is buying Yahoo for $4.83 billion, marking the end of an era for a company that once defined the internet. It is the second time in as many years that Verizon has snapped up the remnants of a fallen internet star as it broadens its digital reach. The nation’s largest wireless carrier paid $4.4 billion for AOL last year. Detroit real estate mogul Dan Gilbert was in the running.
State trooper hit
Interstate 696 has reopened at the Lodge Freeway in Southfield after a Michigan State Police trooper was seriously injured in a crash early this morning, officials said. The unidentified trooper was hospitalized with injuries including five broken ribs after the 7 a.m. crash. He was policing a previous crash when he was hit while seated in his patrol car parked on the shoulder, according to state police.
Captain Marvel
Oscar winner Brie Larson has a new title to add to her resume: Superhero. Disney and Marvel announced Saturday at Comic-Con that Larson will star in “Captain Marvel” as the butt-kicking air force pilot Carol Danvers who gets special powers after an alien encounter.
