Kay Felder to sign two-way contract with Detroit Pistons

Kay Felder is coming home.

The former Detroit Pershing and Oakland University star point guard has agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with the Pistons, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The contract will be signed Sunday, the source said.

The source requested anonymity because the Pistons have not announced the signing.

Felder is likely to report to the Grand Rapids Drive, Detroit's G-League team.

The Pistons went searching for point-guard help after Reggie Jackson suffered a badly sprained ankle in late December. He's expected to be out until at least February.

Felder, 22, was a second-round pick in 2016 by the Cavaliers, who gave him a contract that guaranteed him $1 million. He bounced between the Cavs and the G-League last year, but was traded to the Hawks before this season as Cleveland's backcourt was crowded by the signing of Derrick Rose.

The Hawks waived him two days later, and he signed with the Chicago Bulls, who were in need of depth at point guard because of injuries. He was waived last month.

"Kay is a really tough-nosed kid. That’s great; I’m excited for him," Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said of the reported signing. "He did some good things for our team: He’s ultra-quick, bouncy and can get to the rim and he’s a guy who can get it going."

In two seasons, Felder has played in 56 games, averaging 3.9 points and 1.4 assists.

In college at Oakland, he regularly made the national highlight reels. As a junior, he led the nation in assists (9.3) and was fourth in scoring (24.4), and had some of his biggest games against big-time competition, like the 37 points he scored in the overtime loss to then-No. 1 Michigan State at The Palace.

Felder, 5-foot-9 and 176 pounds, surprised a lot of experts when he decided to pass up his senior season and turn professional.
