The North American International Auto Show is the perfect barometer for measuring the prosperity of the auto industry.

When times are good, the displays are elaborate and the parties extravagant. When the industry is struggling, you’re lucky to find a hot dog in Cobo Center during press days.

This year, the record sales and high profits are on full display. Press parties feature lavish spreads and live bands and are being held in some of Detroit’s coolest new spots.

Cobo Center looks first class. The floor plan has been updated, and the automaker displays reflect a spare-no-expense attitude.

This is the first year the extra space in Cobo is truly noticeable. The show feels more expansive and more eye-popping.

Ford’s sprawling Beyond the Blue Oval space gives the auto show a tech show attitude, with iPads and computers at dozens of stations, TED talk-style sessions with Ford executives and breakfast, lunch and snacks throughout the day.

The good times are rolling in Cobo Center, and that’s great news for Detroit.
