Snow showers in the mix through the weekend

As the calendar flips closer to April, winter weather is expected to stick around with unseasonably cool temperatures, rain and a chance of snow showers.

“It’s looking like most of the precipitation (Thursday) morning is going to fall as rain,” said Steve Considine, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township.

Considine said rain is most likely to fall in the areas south of Ann Arbor and Mount Clemens, while areas north should remain dry.

For areas that get rain, the precipitation should move out of the area by 10 a.m. to noon, he said.

“After that, we’re just looking at mostly cloudy skies with a high in the mid- to low-40s,” he said. “It’s a little on the cold side, but dry at least.”

Thursday night is expected to be mostly cloudy with temperatures in the 20s, while Friday should bring temperatures in the low 30s and a 30 percent chance of snow showers, Considine said.

“We’re not looking at anything sticking, just a few scattered snow showers,” he said.

The cool temperatures should remain through the weekend, with temperatures Saturday and Sunday in the mid-30s to low-40s.

It should be sunny on Saturday, but snow showers could return Sunday, he said.

“We have a 30 percent chance of rain on snow (Sunday),” Considine said. “But we’re not expecting any (accumulation) at this point.”

The normal high temperature for late March in Metro Detroit is around 50 degrees, Considine said.

“We pretty much have remained in the same pattern that we’ve been in since January, which is causing persistent influxes of colder air from Canada.”

There is relief in sight, he said.

“It is looking like toward the end of (next) week, we may actually be able to see high temperatures getting up near 60 degrees.”
