Tigers hoping for the best on Aviles’ wrist

Chicago — Mike Aviles looked like he had bone sticking up out of his left wrist as he walked past the media on his way to the X-ray room underneath U.S. Cellular Field on Tuesday night.

It’s not what it seemed. Apparently he just has naturally boney wrists.

“Nothing is broken,” he said.

Still, he might be out for a while after bending the left wrist awkwardly making a diving attempt on a single by Jose Abreu in the eighth inning. He came out of the game immediately.

“We don’t know the severity of it,” manager Brad Ausmus said. “He’s getting an X-ray now. There’s always concern when a guy comes out of a game. Apparently he dealt with something like this before in Cleveland. So we’re hoping it’s nothing that will keep him out.”

Aviles started the game at third base. Nick Castellanos was the DH and Andrew Romine started in center. When Aviles left the game, Romine moved to third and Cameron Maybin, given the night off, went in to center field.

The Tigers used eight different relievers the last two games, and lefty set-up man Justin Wilson never warmed up once.

Ausmus said after the game there was nothing physically wrong with him.

“We just wanted to give him a few days off,” he said.
