U.P. border bridge to get lighting upgrade

Sault Ste. Marie — The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge is getting an energy-efficient lighting upgrade and plans are in the works for some colorful illumination.

Officials say an upgrade is taking place on pole-mounted lights along the bridge deck traffic lanes for the bridge connecting Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Workers have replaced some of the 56 high-pressure sodium lighting fixtures on the bridge with new energy-efficient light-emitting diode fixtures. The rest will be replaced in the next few weeks.

Later this summer, yellow-white lights mounted on the bridge’s high curved arches will be replaced with LEDs. A red, white, and blue array of lights on the U.S. arch and a red and white array on the Canadian arch will represent the colors of each nation’s flag.
