The theft of more than a half million dollars from back of an armored truck outside Detroit’s Greektown Casino remained under investigation late Friday.

The Detroit Police Department and investigators from the Detroit office of the FBI are investigating the theft as a larceny because the money was lifted without even a hint of violence, according to Detroit Police Sgt. Cassandra Lewis.

“It was a larceny as opposed to a robbery,” Lewis said late Friday. “No weapon was used, no threats, no force and no injuries.”

The money was taken when a man dressed as a security guard approached a Loomis Armoured vehicle at the intersection of Beaubien and Monroe at about 8:15 a.m. Friday, police said.

“The suspect approached the back of the vehicle, took bags of money and fled,” Officer Jennifer Moreno said. “There were no injuries, and the incident is under investigation.”

Police had no description of the suspect but are reviewing security camera footage.

“At this time, it looks like the suspect just walked away,” Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt said. “He didn't have a getaway vehicle.”

No gun was brandished during the incident.

Jill Washburn, director of media for the Detroit office of the FBI, confirmed that the agency was taking part in the investigation.
